Glenmark has established its Biologics Research Centre, focused on the Research and Development of biologicals, in the Canton of Neuchatel, Switzerland.
The location has been chosen to get access to world-class biologics know-how, international talent and service infrastructure. Glenmark is the only Indian company with a biologics R&D center of this size outside of India.
The centre is dedicated to the discovery and development of novel monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). The available know-how is also used to develop a strong biosimilar product portfolio comprising of mAbs.
The unit has capabilities to develop monoclonal antibodies from inception through to preclinical and undertake the necessary development work for clinical studies. Know-how is in place to discover entirely novel molecules and also to engineer antibodies. The immunoassay team, analytics & QC team and Process Development capabilities allow Glenmark to achieve the necessary product development milestones through in-house efforts. The up and down-stream equipment installed is state-of-the art and of substantial capacity.
Although the center is operational only since 2006, several patents on novel monoclonal antibodies have been filed. Lead products are GBR 500, an NBE under development for treatment of multiple sclerosis and other inflammatory diseases is undergoing Phase I clinical trials in the US while GBR 600 a monoclonal anti-platelet antibody, has received approval from the EU regulatory agency for undertaking Phase I trials.
